Dear potential Wise Wall Warrior,

We would like to extend to you the opportunity of applying as a volunteer for our ‘Wise Wall Project’.

The Wise Wall Project:

Migration from the rural Uttarakhand, India to urban areas has become the biggest challenge and threat in the state. Out of Uttarakhand’s 16,793 villages, 1,053 have no inhabitants and have been labelled as ghost villages.

We plan to take up a remote village called ‘Saur’ in Tehri Garhwal, Uttarakhand and collect life lessons of the whole village. We will then paint those life lessons on the walls of the houses they were collected from.

We have chosen this 300 year old village called ‘Saur’ because it has been labelled as a ‘ghost village’ due to the excessive migration that has taken place in it. Only 12 families are left behind in the village. Most houses lie in a dilapidated and abandoned state.

This Tehri village will be the first village in the world to have a documented database of life lessons from an entire community exhibited on the exterior of every house wall including the abandoned ones.

We want YOU to help us make this village come alive 🙂

Your Role as a Volunteer:

As a volunteer, you will be part of a team of esteemed photographers, painters and artists and will simply help our team by adding colour onto the walls in this village, their lives and your lives. 🙂

Project Timeline:

(1st June- 30th June): This is the main execution phase in which the painting of the village will commence on the 1st of June. The artists, volunteers and guests will start painting life lessons of the migrated families (previously documented) on the abandoned houses. Simultaneously, the documentation of the life lessons and stories of the families in the village will take place.

After reviewing your application, if you are selected we will be allocating specific dates (minimum one week) for your engagement and participation in the project in the month of June.

Our Homestay: We will be staying in a restored ancestral home turned into a cosy homestay in the village by an organisation called ‘Due North‘; they have been actively working to restore Saur.

We are happy to share that we will be taking care of your food and stay for the time slot you will be allocated after the selection process. Request you to kindly arrange for your own travel to Dehradun from your home city.
