A lovenote to Maya Angelou
Maya Angelou was the ultimate teacher. She would have been 90 today. Although, I never met her in person yet I feel I have known her personally. Through the elaborate writings, powerful poetry, essays, speeches she lives on.
I was working late one evening at my first job when I heard the news that Maya had passed away in her home in Winston Salem, North Carolina. A flood of emotions took over me. I was humbled to have discovered her work. I was upset that I would not get to meet her again.
Here’s a love note I wrote that evening for my beloved Maya:
Some people are like ice creams, even if you don’t get your favourite flavour it is still a joy to eat. Some people, not so much in the degrees they hold, award they have won or with captivating credentials they received; but the way they walk into a room, smile without a reason, breathe for a purpose, leave a deep impact. Some people change the world by just making their presence felt. Some people make us better by just having known them. Some people no matter how far, how age strange, how famous, how rich; make us feel the pain of having lost a close friend in a total stranger. Some people do small things in a big way. Some people feel deeply all the time and, that is mistaken as their weakness. Some people in fact, secretly thrive knowing that to feel passionately-compassionately is their biggest strength. Some people are misunderstood way too many times. Some people keep forgiveness in their heart like change in their wallets. Some people carry compliments like prayers, always handy. Some people turns soft pillows, fluffy toys, quotation books, good music, long walks, hot showers, postcard letters; just when you need them. Some people are too good to be true. Some people care in awkward ways, unacceptable ways and unbelievable ways. Some people never let you feel lonely. Some people celebrate desire and their ability to overcome it. Some people rejoice at the sight of the sun and the glimpse of the moon. Some people think too much about bettering the world. Some people get hurt often but healed sooner. Some people like telescopes carry far sighted vision. Some people are beam balance that measures you always ‘worthy’. Some people don’t calculate your viewpoints, tally your ideas and rate your belief systems. Some people put principles ahead of pejoratives. Some people like flexible jeans, fit all sizes. Some people turn into lexicons and languages, easy to understand-hard to forget. Some people like electricity are available for multipurpose use. Some people are the living legend of holy hymns and scared verses. Some people are old photographs, nothing about them changes. Some people are way too wise for this world, have talent the size of the universe, and live life fully by not getting tangled in making a living. Some people believe too much in giving. Some people are a victory of mankind. Let’s try to be those people for someone. Let’s be someone’s favourite thing to talk about. Someone’s favourite conversation!
All of us are not Maya Angelou but all of us can try to be.
